Private rental deposit

Private rental deposit

  • All landlords from the private rental sector will ask for a deposit before you can move into the property.

  • Tenants who are in receipt of housing benefit or universal credit may qualify for a discretionary housing payment from their local council to help with their deposit, rent in advance and removal costs. These costs are there to help you secure a rental property without the obligation to pay back.

  • Note that jobseekers’ tenants or tenants on pension credit, income support or employment and support allowance, may qualify for a budgeting loan from Jobcentre Plus to pay the cost of moving, to pay rent in advance and for essential items such as equipment for your new home. Unfortunately, this loan must be repaid within two years. The good news is that no interest is added. A budgeting loan can also be used to pay for the cost of moving, or for essential items such as furniture or equipment in your new home.

  • In case you do not meet the above criteria and you are not eligible to receive any kind of benefit or universal credit tenants can always contact their local council for help or direction.
