AVOID SLEEPING IN THE STREETS

  • I have been fortunate enough to always have a roof over my head. But when I see people living on the street my heart is broken, and I wish I could do more to help. I look and wonder. But what I never do is judge, criticise or blame. I believe that it is not my place to comment on someone else’s misfortune. Urging the more fortunate to help is also not something I would do because I do not have the power to influence anyone in this way.

What I know is, we should not take anything for granted. Today you may have everything and the next day you could find yourself sitting outside in the cold with nowhere to go. Seeing people without accommodation is a reminder and a wake-up call for all of us. No one is protected against poverty, no one.

This reminds me to make sure that I pay my rent on time or do my best to keep a good relationship with my landlord so that I do not get evicted from my rental accommodation. Especially during these cold days.

If you are renting or sharing accommodation, it is essential to keep yourself safe, which means taking the time to read your tenancy agreement and see what you can get out of the agreement to help you when you are not happy with your accommodation. Take the time to discuss with your landlord on what you want done before winter sets in. Have your boiler checked, windows properly sealed against droughts and switch your electricity or gas provider if you consider that you are paying too much. Whatever you decide to do, please don’t end up sleeping on the street.
